For The Modern Homeschool Family Living the Educational Life

Introduction

I apologize in advance for the USA focus of this page. Personally, I feel that it is just as important to learn about Mexican and Canadian history as it is to learn about USA history. Unfortunately, it is considerably more challenging to find CM friendly resources for those two countries. If I find any be sure that I will add them!

American History Spines

This Country of Ours by H.E. Marshall. Wilder Publications. 2008. I actually like this book but it has some short comings that means we won't be using it as our spine but it may well work for other families. I like the nice narrative style and rich language as they provide a nice flow for reading aloud. Unfortunately, nearly 3/4 of the book covers exploration through colonial times leaving little room for anything beyond the early 1800s. Due to when it was originally written it is not politically correct and can be a bit "God heavy" in some chapters.

American History Whole Books

The Making of America: The History of the United States from 1492 to the Present by Robert D. Johnson. National Geographic. 2003. A rather short book that covers the highlights of USA history and ends with 9/11. I wouldn't count this as a wonderful book but it seems to be a good fit for those kids who do not really enjoy history or just need a quick overview to peg their information to.
