Is This Fireweed?

Posted on July 4, 2009 at 9:59 PM

I'm thinking this plant in my yard is fireweed?  What do you think?  I know fireweed has some medicinal uses but I must admit that  I like it because fireweed honey tastes absolutely devine--it's my personal favorite and can be difficult to find.  We also saw small stands of fireweed on the way to Horning's yesterday.Think this will be the next plant I focus on for my nature/medicinal plant journal. Unfortunately mine are just past their peak bloom. I was going to do yellow dock next but the chickens ate it before I could document it lol. Interesting that they won't eat plantain though. Wonder if they'd think fireweed is tasty?

Mountain Man said it's definitely fireweed. We have some in our yard too. We haven't tried giving it to our chickens...

Oh good. I thought so but wanted a second opinion. I haven't tried feeding it to the chickens wither--it's suppose to have laxative properties. For dumb clucks they do seem to know what they should and shouldn't eat lol.

Assuming the flowers have four petals each, I would say it's definitely fireweed, too.
