My husband is having surgery tomorrow and we'll need to keep our children ages 3 and almost 6 busy indoors while he recovers (so they aren't jumping around and bumping into him. They can go outside too but the afternoons are really too hot lately.
I could use some new ideas. My kids are pretty good with washable mess... It's a bit last minute but I could run out and get supplies if you all have ideas for me.

When my kids were this age and it would get this hot we'd make ice castles. Take a bin or even a one of those kiddie pools to use as a base. Make LARGE ice blocks using random bowls, cups, pans, etc. Freezing them overnight usually works best. Next take paint, food coloring or whatever item of that sort you have handy. Add water and pour into various spray bottles and squirt bottles. Place the ice blocks into your base. Then have at it. The kids use the colored water to spray and color the ice blocks. They will melt into cool shapes as they are sprayed. For other effects you can have a shaker or two of salt and the kids will notice that this melts the ice faster. Sometimes the kids would even freeze their little plastic toys into the ice blocks to be "freed". This can be done indoors or out; just cover the floor if you do it indoors. What about making salt dough lands for some of their toys? My kids did this once after learning how to make salt dough maps. They used the technique to make a crater like "planet" for their astronauts to fly to. I think we just used a chunk of plywood for the base and another time they just used a large pizza box for the base. Create a get well mural for their dad on a super large piece of butcherblock type paper taped to the wall. Use oversized boxes to create their own little inside fort. My kids liked this so much they even made one for the cats lol. Capture bugs when they are outside to bring in and study for the afternoon. Make their own flubber or playdough. There are tons of recipes on the internet for these. Same with finger and face paints. Can you tell I like to have my kids make their own entertainment lol. Now whenever KodyGirl wants a new toy she just makes herself one lol.

Oooh, these are great ideas! They would love the ice too. I've never done that one. We will have lots of crushed ice for the shoulder too, so they could use some of that also. They will be at Grama's house today so I could freeze up some bowls and things tonight. I also want to pick up some Toobs. At this point my MIL would probably help me mix up some doughs. I do have a long list of recipes for doughs, slime and such. I gave her a copy months ago. I'll see if I can find some butcher paper too. I'll have some time today while he's in surgery and recovery.
Thanks for the ideas!! My mind has been on everything but the kids...

Ah- puppet shows that kids can do themselves for daddy and to entertain themselves. Books and some educational shows as well might help.
