If your family is reading the Little House books, particularly the Long Winter, I would recommend that you, the parent, also read The Children's Blizzard by David Laskin.  It describes, in great detail, the blizzards and bad weather that Laura Ingalls Wilder wrote about in her books that take place in South Dakota. I read this book in just a couple of days as it is one of those books that calls to you when you aren't reading it. I will say that it is pretty heavy on the meterological info but it was still a fairly easy read. Anyone interested in this particular time period (late 1880's), immigrants,  and how the pioneers survived plus anyone interested in the history of meterology would find this book interesting. I will warn that it is not for the faint of heart since it does describe how many of the people, esp. children and their teachers, froze to death out on the prairie during that blizzard. By the end of the book you will be quite familiar with how frostbite and hypothermia progress in the body. A fascinating, yet somewhat unusual read. I couldn't put the darn thing down! (I may have been motivated by realizing that some of my ancestors probably experienced this blizzard as the family was in MN. at this time).
