My family just started reading The Saga of Erik the Viking by Terry Jones (of Monty Python fame) and we are enjoying it thoroughly. Everytime I tried to stop reading one of the kids would beg me to keep going. At this rate we will be finished with it by the end of the week. It's rare that all three of my kids truly enjoy a book so I take notice when it happens. In many ways this book reminded all of us of when we read the Odyssey. Very similar types of adventures with one central hero and a few faithful followers/friends. While it can be a bit skimpy on the details of the adventures there is still enough detailed descriptive language and cultural references for kids to latch on to. Truly a book that would appeal to many ages. It's hard to tell for sure but I think this may be a retelling of some longer Norse legend.

Just a warning that the story gets rather gory and violent in the middle but it is still a great story. My kids are eating it up.
