Does anyone have recommendations for high school US History from the 1800s on?  My son has really outgrown the A History of US series but I'm somewhat at a loss as to what to move him onto.  I know I can always piece together a program based on Great Courses from The Teaching Company but I'm wondering if there is something that I am missing.

In case it helps I think art appreciation will tie in as he has chosen to study the famous Civil War photographer (name escapes me) Hardy and we *still* have to get to our author study of Mark Twain since Shakespeare sort of took over his reading this year; so we will be hitting the 18oos pretty hard this coming year.

Are you looking for a spine or a group of living books?  My son did Am History the living books way last year.  I can list some of the books he read if that is what you're looking for.

I'm mostly looking for a spine, but since we haven't really made up his reading list yet I am open to those recommendations as well. Any documentary recommendations are welcome as well since he actually likes a multimedia approach for history and science. It's been 14 years since I taught high school level US history and I'm feeling at a bit of a loss. Somehow it seemed easier when he was just in middle school lol.

This is from the course description sent with his college application.  He studied Am History in his senior year. Our description clarified that the texts were supplemental and not the main readings.   He also did an Am lit course at the same time and those readings aren't mentioned here.

BTW I have listened to some of the Teaching Company's US History course and love it so that is something I am considering for my daughter for this fall. I'm not talking about the high school level but the History of the United States, http://www.teach12.com/ttcx/CourseDescLong2.aspx?cid=8500

We are actually going to try A Patriots History of the United State: From Columbus to the War on Terror  I am also thinking about adding in some videos on topics from the Annenburg site and maybe try some webquests for specific topics we read about.
